This isn’t the kind of place you’d expect to find a thriving metropolis, but that’s what is happening in northern Utah. It’s called Fort Pearce and it has been hiding in plain sight for decades. Located at St. George, UT 84790, about 50 miles north of Salt Lake City, Fort Pearce was built by the Ute Indians and later used as a military fortification from 1867-1898. Today, visitors can tour the ruins of the fort and explore its many hidden nooks and crannies.
How to Get to Fort Pearce
Fort Pearce is accessible by car, though parking can be a bit tricky. You can also visit by public transportation via the North Central Utah Transit Authority (UCAR) Route 192 bus. Both Utah State University and the University of Utah have campuses in the area, which gives you a few other ways to visit too. If you’re looking to stay closer to the fort, you can also choose to stay at one of the many nearby hotels, including the Courtyard by Marriott or the Ramada Inn. As for visiting times, Fort Pearce is open every day between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Between mid-May and mid-October, you can visit during the evening hours as well.
Plan your trip and check the weather
The best time to visit Fort Pearce is during the spring and fall when the weather is nice and the crowds are at least a little less hectic. You can also plan your trip around the fort’s open hours and avoid the worst of the crowds. During the summer, the temperature is usually in the mid-80s, but it can quickly get hotter. Be sure to bring sufficient sunscreen and water. However, be careful not to visit during the monsoon season when the air is heavy with moisture and the temperature is much higher. And of course, don’t forget to check the Fort Pearce weather forecast before you head out. You’ll want to be sure it’s not raining or too windy. More about St. George.
Take a self-guided tour of Fort Pearce
If you’re planning to visit Fort Pearce, it’s definitely a good idea to book a tour first. You can do that online or by calling the Fort Pearce visitor center. While you can explore the fort on your own if you’re up for it, it’s a lot easier if you’ve done some advance research. The fort was built on a hill, which makes it easy to lose your bearings and make a wrong turn. You’ll want to make sure you have your bearings straight before venturing out on your own. If you do go on your own, you’ll still want to follow the self-guided tour. There are plenty of signs around the fort to help you navigate and get your bearings. And it’s well worth it to have a guide walking you through the fort’s many nooks and crannies.
Stay for the sunset and night view of the fort
Even if you don’t plan on visiting Fort Pearce, it’s worth staying at least one night in the area. While you can visit Fort Pearce on your own, you’ll be able to see it in all its glory much better if you’re staying in the area. And once you’re there, you’ll want to make sure you make the most of your time. You can start by booking a tour of the Utah Salt Lake City Desert Museum. While the museum isn’t restricted to the desert and has plenty of other cool things to see and do, the desert museum’s tour is specifically about the area and especially about Fort Pearce. If you have some extra time and don’t mind spending it outdoors, you can also check out the Utah desert and see red sandstone cliffs and sand dunes. You’ll also want to make sure you spend some time getting a real taste of the area’s culture, which can only be done if you’re there in person.
